Tasting Notes: Lime, raisin, milk chocolate, dried apricot.
In the Cup
This coffee was a standout on our cupping table and we were so excited to start roasting it! What stood out for us first was its body - a luscious silky milk chocolate pleasantly coating our palettes. Followed by some lime acidity, that turns into raisin and dried stone fruit, this is such a delightful cup!
Origin & Producer
Burundi's coffee production is mainly centered in the highlands of Kayanza, situated on the northern border with Rwanda. However, unlike other coffee-producing regions, it is nearly impossible to trace single-producer, single-farm, or single-variety lots due to the unique purchasing aspect of Burundi's coffee industry. Typically, coffees are marketed under the appellation of the washing station where they were processed.
In the case of this coffee, it was sourced from small farmers surrounding the Nemba washing station, each of whom owns less than half a hectare of land. Apart from coffee, they also grow crops like bananas, beans, yams, taro, and cassava for household consumption and sale.
3113 farmers contribute to the Nemba washing station, where the coffee is sorted, de-pulped, washed, and dried. The beans receiving high cupping scores become part of a blended community microlot. The microlot cannot be traced back to particular farmers, yet the combination of the beans is remarkable. We feel privileged to obtain this brilliant coffee!
