Tasting Notes: Raspberry, hibiscus, rose hips, honey
In the Cup
Year after year we come back to this gem from the Reko coffee growing community and the Aricha washing station because of its bright acidity and complexity. We often notice subtle differences in the flavor profile of this coffee through the seasons (some of our favorite notes being juicy citrus, tropical mango, and ripe berry). This year's crop is true to form - very juicy and bright, with a delightful fresh raspberry, hibiscus and rose hip character - coupled with the sweetness of honey.
Origin & Processing
Around five hundred farmers from the vicinity regularly bring their cherries to the washing station. Unlike many washing stations in Ethiopia that combine the cherries from the communities in one vicinity into one lot, the Aricha station is unique in that its coffee can be traced back to the exact community that grew and harvested the cherries, such as Reko, Naga Singage, or Aricha communities - and in this case, Reko,
Reko is a community that lives up in the Reko mountain area in Yirgacheffe’s Kochere woreda (district). The altitude is higher there and the varietals are a mixture of Kurume, other regional landraces, and disease-resistant JARC varietals. However, what gives it a distinct flavor profile is due its unique microclimate and growing conditions.
